So before I got pregnant Seth and I used to run together. When we first started running together I told Seth that I kind of like running but I HATE racing! Do you know why I hate racing? Because before every race in high school I would get so nervous and so nauseous. Sometimes I would even throw up. So I can't believe I signed up for a race! Today while I was out doing my run I was thinking about that race and I started getting nauseous. I still can't believe I'm going to do this.

Seth thinks I'm funny. I told him he doesn't understand. He's never run in a race and even though he's done sports, he has never been the girl in last place that everyone claps for because they feel sorry for her. Ha ha. I told Seth I have been that girl so many times. And then I shook my fist at him.

Anyway, I'm already nervous about it and the race isn't until March. But I can picture the horribleness of it in my mind!

Hi,

It takes a lot of courage to sign up for a race. What race is it? A winner isn't someone that finishes first but someone who starts a race. A winner is someone that has the courage to face their fear. There are millions of people that just sit on their couches all day watching t.v. You are not one of those people. You are strong and you can do anything you set your mind to.

You need to think positive. Don't under estimate the power of positive thinking. Don't think about the race. Just think in your mind it is just a regular fun run.

Just have fun and don't sweat it!!!

Kristina! I'm so proud of you for signing up for that race. I felt a lot like you did about starting to race again, but let me assure you that it is a different world. You and I both ran XC in high school, and both, shall we say, did not dominate. (I've been clapped in before too...)

But running road races as an adult is very different. In high school we were racing against young people who were all very fit from training with a team. As an adult, you get people who sometimes never run, and just decide to go do a race to support some cause or something. Go read my race report for Pat's run on April 7th, 2007. I had a blast and came in about in the middle, and I was running 11:50 pace, or something like that. I would recommend taking a friend who will run with you and jut enjoying yourself this first race. Then next time you can get serious about inflicting pain on yourself and trying to set a new PR. :P

Thanks linda and lybi. I'm still trying not to think about it because it still makes me nervous. But I'm sure everything will be okay. It is nice to know that you can run 11:50 pace and not come in dead last :) Still I'm shooting for under 40 minutes for this. Maybe that is undershooting but I really don't want to turn it into a big deal. Plus then if I can manage to be under 35:00 I'd be ecstatic.

Lybi is right. Road races as an adult are much different from a high school race. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy going. At least where I stand, in the middle of the pack. I still get nervous too or perhaps it is just excitement. I'm not sure. You should get the book "No Need for Speed" by John "The Penguin" Bingham. He is a great writer. One of my favorite quotes from him is: "You don't have to run fast to be a real runner"
