Seth and I graduated from BYU April 2007. Our beautiful son Simeon was born that May. I started running again in June with the encouragement of Seth and Lybi. Seth, Lybi, Laura, and their mom are the ones who really keep me running :P

I woke up feeling really tired this morning and I was also feeling nauseous. So I ate some oatmeal wondering if I wasn't just hungry. I felt a little better at first and then wondered for a second if I was going to lose my oatmeal. Anyway, I was debating on going for a walk but the Snortums started acting tired so I put him down for a nap. I'll see how I feel when he wakes up. I might still make it out for a walk before it starts to get too warm. That's if it gets warm today. Yesterday I didn't even turn on the fan it was so cool all day. And Simeon had to wear long sleeves and pants and socks. Right now I'm all wrapped up in a blanket. I hate being cold.

Last night Simeon fell asleep without crying at all. He slept until 6:45! It's pretty amazing. He was only up for an hour and even though he was acting sleepy, I wonder if he really was ready for a nap. He hasn't fallen asleep yet and it has been 15 minutes. I think he's just resisting naps in general. He'd much rather play :)

I finally made it out at 11:00. Yea for me! The sun was out and it was pretty warm, but there was a nice breeze that helped it to be not so hot. I ran a little bit different route today. I was getting tired of the route I usually run. Unfortunately our subdivision isn't very big and all the houses look the same, so no matter what route I take, it gets old pretty quick. I'll be excited to run on the ditch bank again.

My knee was hurting at the very end of my run. When I got back I did a few lunges and leg lifting exercises but they also hurt my knee so I stopped. Also, a funny thing happened on my run. There is a grate that extends across the road to drain water. Usually I run over it just fine, but today I stepped wrong in one of the slots and turned my ankle a little bit. It hurt for the next few steps but it was fine for the rest of my run. So that wasn't a big deal but it was kind of funny. I'm sure if anyone had been watching they would have laughed and said, "Look at that stupid clumsy girl." I look funny when I run anyway. I look even more funny when I trip :)

The leg lifting exercises should help eventually if you have runners knee but don't expect it to help the day you feel pain. You'd be better off doing the exercises before a run or long afterward.

I'm not sure if runners knee is what you have of course. Runners knee is caused by the knee cap not moving straight up and down in it's groove. The leg lifts are designed to strengthen the muscles that the knee cap attaches to so they will keep the knee cap in line. Runners knee hurts near the knee cap (or right under it).

On the other hand if you have pain on the sides of your knee you may have a different (but very common) condition. Where are you feeling pain?

It hurts in the inside, right under the knee cap. When I'm sitting down, if I bend my knee back and forth I can hear it pop and I can feel a grinding feeling with my hand.

I've had trouble with this knee in the past but it's been worse in the last year. Last year Seth and I went hiking. I slipped going downhill and when I did that leg slid forward pretty hard. I've had more trouble with my knee ever since then. It could also be that I got pregnant right after than and your joints get kind of messed up during pregnancy.

Thanks for the advice about doing leg lifts before a workout. I will try that next time.

Great job Kristina. Sorry you were feeling queasy! And watch out for those Kristina guards on the road (cattle guards).

Hey Heber, there's a guy who just joined the blog who has knee problems and really wants feedback. I have no idea what to tell him. Would you check out his blog? You seem to know a lot about this kind of stuff. His name is Barry.

Sorry you are hurting. Maybe you should stay on the elliptical exerciser for a little while until you get the knee back in shape a little. I know very little about the knee but I know it isn't a good idea to keep running if there is something wrong with it.

BTW you changed the name of your blog!!

You might check your shoes. If you are running in shoes with a lot of miles (walking or running), they might be broken down. Have you gone to a specialty running store and had them fit you? If you current shoe doesn't have enough support of the medial (arch) side, it will cause the knee pain you are describing. Also, when you are running, look down and see if you are running with your feet turned out. A lot of women will turn their feet out when they get tired while running and also when they don't have enough medial support. You will probably be more prone to do this post-pregnancy. If you find you are doing that and want more info, post and I'll give you all the details.

I would tell you how old and worn out my shoes are, but I don't want to horrify anyone. Seth has promised me new shoes, especially if I showed I really was serious about running regularly. I am serious about it so I will have to put some more pressure on him.

Also, I'm pretty sure my feet don't turn out. I've always had problems with my feet turning in too much. My high school coach always pointed out that my toes point in. She always said I walk pigeon-toed. I also over-pronate and I wear custom corrective insoles.

I'll bet you it is the shoes. Think of the cost of the shoes in terms of how many medical copays they cost. Because, if you don't get new shoes ASAP, then you will be having doctors' visits (plural) and possibly have to go to physical therapy. Will that convince the med student? ;-)
