Seth and I graduated from BYU April 2007. Our beautiful son Simeon was born that May. I started running again in June with the encouragement of Seth and Lybi. Seth, Lybi, Laura, and their mom are the ones who really keep me running :P

What a sad week I've had (as far as running goes). Actually I have been using our walk-fit (non-electric treadmill thing) at home almost every day. But I still don't think I've been getting in enough miles to count. Plus I can't figure out how to hook up the mile calculating computer that goes with it. It's hard to be on it for a lot of time. It wears you out like running never could :)

Anyway, I just commented on Laura's blog about the cold. And the thought occurred to me that I should pose a question for everyone. My high school CC coach / science teacher warned us against running in cold weather (below freezing). She said the cold air could hurt your lungs. I don't have the best lungs anyway so I don't want to make them worse. I guess it is not actually below freezing here most of the time, but does anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems a lot of you run in the cold and I've heard people say it's okay as long as you dress properly.....

She was kind of eccentric about a lot of things. She also said if you don't drink enough water your intestines will stick together and it's really gross. She had a video. She liked to scare people with it....

Hmmm. I bet it depends on how far below freezing it is. At some point, a few degrees above absolute zero, I'm sure your lungs will freeze. But not if it's 30 degrees F. When we lived in Michigan I took long walks when it was as low as 15 degrees F, and I was fine, but I got used to it gradually. Everybody's gotta have at least one really weird High School teacher. Did I ever tell you about my ditsy science teacher who stuck her fingers in the blender and turned it on?

Its a myth you can't hurt your lungs in cold weather. I run outside when its below zero. Now some runners have a harder time breathing in the cold weather than others but that's the only difference.

Also dressing properly is a big key. Cold Gear Underarmour is the best stuff and will work and keep you warm in any weather. Its expensive but it works.
